Earlier this year, Samsung announced the first ever phone to come with a SnapDragon 845 SOC and and with the year about to end, Qualcomm announced the successor to the SnapDragon 845 at the Qualcomm Summit.
The SOC is called the SnapDragon 855. The speculations about it not being called the SnapDragon 8150 were true.
So let’s talk about what has changed!
The SnapDragon 845 was designed on the 10nm process meaning that the SoC was just 10 nm in size. But, the SnapDragon 855 has been designed on the 7nm process. The reduction in size leads to an increase in power efficiency and usage.
The SnapDragon 845 was an octa-core processor with 8x Qualcomm® Kryo™ 385 CPU Cores clocked up to 2.8Ghz. The SnapDragon 855 is said to be 30% faster than the previous chip and is said to be a direct competitor to the A12 Bionic.
The SnapDragon SOC is compatible with Qualcomm’s X50 Modem which is their flagship 5G Modem meaning the phones equipped with 855 SOC will be compatible to use 5G Networks. Now, 5G is said to be 40% faster than the existing 4G Modems. Brands like Samsung have announced that they will be unveiling a 5G Device in-partnership with Verizon. AT& T also has announced a few plans with regard to 5G Networks.
Multi-Core AI Engine:
The SnapDragon 855 also comes with the 4th Generation of it’s AI Engine which is 30% better than the AI Engine which comes with the 845 SOC. It also comes with the Computer Vision Image Signal Processing engine which according to Qualcomm, is the world’s first Vision Image Signal Processing Engine which will use your camera to understand your surroundings and provide better VR & AR experience.
3-D Sonic Sensor:
The SnapDragon 855 will be compatible with the 3-D UltraSonic Fingerprint sensors which will map your Fingerprint in 3D. The fingerprint scanner will be using 3D recognition unlike the ones found on Vivo, One Plus and Huwaei devices which use 2D recognition using an optical fingerprint sensor.
This 3-D Sonic Sensor will be much more accurate than the ones found on Vivo, Huwaei and One Plus devices.
Qualcomm also announced how SnapDragon 855 will enhance gaming and performance. It calls it Elite Gaming where your gaming experience is said to improve quite a bit from the previous generation.
